Use JPG for photos and compatibility

JPG is supported everywhere and works well for photographs. It is lossy, so repeated edits and exports can reduce quality.

Use JPG when compatibility matters more than transparency or perfect sharpness.

Use WebP or AVIF for modern websites

WebP is broadly supported and often much smaller than JPG or PNG. AVIF can be even smaller, but encoding is slower and older browsers may not support it.

For most websites, WebP is a safe modern default. AVIF is excellent when your audience uses current browsers and you want maximum compression.
